Introduction (w/ a smudge of recruiting)

My name is Rachel Fischer, I’m a senior at the University of Oklahoma.  Mythology and Folklore is one of seven classes I’m taking this semester.  I’m graduating after three years of being in college as opposed to four, or five.  In order to accomplish that I take really heavy course loads, typically 21 hours a semester.  My major is Criminology, I will also have a minor in Anthropology, along with an emphasis in Pre-Law.  So essentially school is like a full-time job for me and at this point I feel like everything is a mad race to the finish in May.

Apart from my hectic school schedule I try to lead an active lifestyle.  My first year at the University I was a rower.  Beautiful sport, amazing team, the girls are all tremendously talented athletes; however, rowing was not for me.  I now spend my time playing for the OU Roses, the Women’s Rugby team that is affiliated with the University, but it’s a club team so you don’t need to be enrolled to play.  Rugby is an awesome sport and continuously one of my favorite parts of my weeks.  (If you’re an athletic girl looking for a team to be on… you should come try out rugby and see how you like it.  Cause the sport is amazing, the team is incredibly fun, and you can tell everyone that you’re a warrior.  Yes, I just recruited on my blog post. Whaddup!!  No seriously, if you want to play please come check it out!)

Upon completion of my undergrad it is ultimately my goal to attend law school and obtain my Juris Doctor and practice law.  I’m leaning towards interests in both family law and constitutional law.  Preferably I would attend the University of Oklahoma Law Program, because I love my Sooners.  Also, three years of undergrad, graduating at the ripe age of 20 was not exactly expected and I hadn’t intended to leave Norman so quickly.

Other than my school, my rugby, and my hopes of law school my social life is that of a typical college student.  I live in a tiny apartment with my best friend.  I own a three-legged cat named Dimitri.  I don’t call my parents nearly as often as one should.  I am surprisingly tatted for a girl of my age.  I have four large tattoos, all of which can't be seen in formal wear.  I go out with my friends and workout with my teammates.  I workout with my friends and go out with my teammates.  I procrastinate, as all college students do.  However, this is getting done really early, so maybe that’s changing!

  1. Rachel! It's fun to read this post and get a sense of who you are! First of all, recruiting in your blog is brilliant. It's a shame that I'm a senior and can't join, but hopefully some others in the class will read it and be interested in rugby. That sounds like a blast! Also, three-legged cat? Love that. Dmitri is also one of the greets names I've heard in a while. I like that you included that you have tattoos, and honestly I really want to get one and have for years and years but being indecisive has led to my procrastinating as well... typical. Anyway, you seem rad. Enjoy life and cheers to graduating in May!

  2. Wow, seven classes, Rachel: that is intense! But seven is a LUCKY number, as they say... maybe you could even do your project for this class on stories with the number seven, ha ha, just for good luck! But seriously, if you are super-busy, and it sounds like you are, then think about the Portfolio option in this class when you hit Week 4 and have to choose. The whole idea there with that option is to help people who know they are short on time... and with seven classes, you might indeed be finding the days very short this semester... but exciting at the same time! And your cat is such a cutie: what a brave little guy to navigate the world on just three legs! But three is also a lucky number... anyway, he looks very sweet, but I can also imagine he is ready to pounce on that Santa Claus ornament as soon as nobody is looking, ha ha. I hope you will enjoy the class!

  3. Criminology and anthropology…cool! Have you read any Arendt or Weber? I took a class in sociology and was fascinated by both of these thinkers. It's pretty cool that you're involved in rugby - that's definitely an intense sport! Best of luck in your early graduation and future studies in law. Your three-legged cat looks cool. I once had a dog that walked only on its two front legs - it was phenomenal and somewhat disconcerting, but your cat looks like he has profound thoughts, so that's better, anyway.

  4. Hi Rachel. That's awesome that you're graduating in only three years! It seems like more and more students these days are even going five years. Law school seems like it would be pretty tough, but I'm sure all of your 21 hour semesters will prepare you for it. I’ve never played rugby myself, but I have a few friends that play on the OU men's team and it seems like a really awesome sport.

  5. Hi Rachel! Wow, that is one ambitious schedule. I am an anthropology major, but I'm also a wife and mother of 2, so I'm going part time :) I tried full time, but my grades suffered. That is impressive that you can keep up that load and actually have a social life. I love cats and 3-legged cats are even more awesome and I love the name. Although I'm 36, I have read all of the Vampire Academy books and love that name (the movie SUCKED though!) Don't know if that's where you got his name, but it made me think of him. I got my first tattoo at 33 and my second at 35. My father is a tattoo artist, so they were free LOL ... and I love them :) Keep up the good work and know that I'm proud of you!

  6. 21 hours a semester! Wow, I felt overwhelmed when taking 16 and 18. I can't imagine taking that many hours at one time. Good for you! I know a few friends that are going to law school here at OU and they love it. You're looking into a good program! Good luck on graduating early and getting into law school. It sounds like you deserve it with your hard work and hectic schedule. I also know some people who play men's rugby. I have always been interested in the sport since it isn't commonplace here in Oklahoma where I grew up. Sounds like I need to check out a game or two.

  7. Hey, Rachel! Way to go taking 21 hours a semester and graduating in three years! Major respect. I think it's neat that you play rugby. I've always been intimidated by rugby players because you all are so tough. I hope you have a great rest of your semester, and I wish you the best of luck in getting into law school and whatnot!

  8. Rachel, congrats on graduating in May! Props for finishing all of that in three years! I almost had to take the summer finishing up my credits, and I am graduating in four years. Also props to being in sports while taking such a hard load! That certainly could not have been easy with all of the practices and games and everything.

  9. Hi Rachel! That is pretty amazing that you’re graduating that quickly. We are on different sides of the spectrum on that one; I’m finishing up my victory lap this semester. Going to law school sounds like such a great opportunity. I wish I had the dedication to attempt any sort of grad school right now. That’s awesome to hear about more people with tattoos. I am curious as to what yours are of now.

  10. The thought of finishing school in 3 years is something very foreign to me... I instead am taking 5 years! I guess I'm in no hurry. Very impressive though. Also I think that it is very cool that you are into rugby. That is a sport that I don't know much about, that I have always wanted to know more about.

  11. Criminology, now that is an awesome field to be in! When I was in high school, I would binge watch Criminal Minds so I think it is great you are doing that kinda stuff. Do you know Emily Carter and Sadie? They are on the OU Roses and I am friends with Emily who just joined last semester but I think Sadie has been on the team for two years. Y’all are crazy strong to play Rugby because I feel like so many injuries can happen even within the first few minutes of the game.

  12. Hi Rachel! First off, WOW! I can't imagine taking 21 hours a semester! You are an inspiration! It's cool that you play rugby. I went to a couple rugby matches last summer and really dug the laid-back atmosphere and sense of deep friendship between the players. My favorite was the alumni match. I also loved that people got to bring chairs, blankets, family, and dogs to the event. It was just really cool. I too am a tattoo lover. I have three, one of which I need to get fixed (I was allergic to the ink and it bled/rejected), and plans for so many more. Also, your cat is totally adorable!

  13. Hello Rachel! Great job on graduating early! I'm on the five year track... I switched majors and schools a couple of times. The flat rate tuition has been good for you then. A friend of mine went to OU Law. She loved it! She had a baby her last year but still pulled it off. You sound like you will do quite well. Just have fun doing it!

  14. Rachel,
I thought I recognized you! I used to row as well. You’re right, the girls are great and the sport was fun. I finally had to quit because of a knee injury and being in pain everyday just wasn’t worth it but, I do miss being on the water sometimes. I am glad that you discovered rugby. I had a friend on the men’s team so I have been to a few matches but I’ve never been to w women’s match. Congrats on graduating early and I wish you all the best in law school!

  15. Hey Rachel! I was on the OU rowing team my freshman year, too! I was only in it for a couple of months, though. It is definitely an intense and beautiful sport! Your workload is really intense! I think it's awesome that you know what you want, and you're obviously extremely driven towards your goals. That's amazing, especially at such a young age. I wish you the best of luck!

  16. Rachel, first of all, your cat is adorable! Secondly, seen classes, really? That is crazy! I am graduating in five years as opposed to four years :-P
Your major sounds interesting, is there something extremely specific you are planning on doing? With your minor and emphasis it seems as though that might be the case. I wish you the best of luck!

  17. Wow! Graduating after just 3 years is incredible! Great job! Thanks for the cool intro. I can't imagine taking seven courses right now, that has to be crazy! Good luck to you in your future, you'll do big things!

  18. I am so jealous you are getting out in just three years! It is going to take me five, so big congrats to you. I could not imagine taking 21 hr a semester. I hate school too much to take all that lol. I hope law school works out and everything goes great! Who knows, maybe you can do it in 1 year if they don’t get in your way .

  19. Hey Rachel! Man, 21 hours a semester sounds like a ton of work. I don't think I have quite the motivation to do much more than 15. My sister was on the rowing team at the University of Minnesota and I know she loved it! I'm not sure I've got the stamina for it. Good luck in law school!

  20. Wow, you are an extremely ambitious student and person in general. I should take notes from you in regards to getting things done and finding my motivation! Since you are such a hard worker, I bet you will do great in law school and as a lawyer too.I've never considered joining any rowing team, but it does sound like a lot of fun. I'm not too physically fit or young enough for that activity now anyway, so I guess I'll just have to do something ore my speed. Lol
Your cat is adorable! I'm definitely a cat person too. I have 4 cats: Blizzard, Thumper, Luna and Snickers. Good luck with the rest of your semester and the mad dash to get all your finals and final projects done. At least in this class, you can work ahead and get all this done before finals week. Good luck to you!
